Sugar Bears Head Back to Mississippi for Battle with Braves

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's basketball team will try once more to travel to Lorman, Miss., to take on Alcorn State. After being rescheduled from last Tuesday, the Sugar Bears and Braves will do battle this Tuesday, playing at 2 p.m.

The Sugar Bears enter the rescheduled game on a four-game winning streak, the first for the team since February of 2021, when Central Arkansas won four-straight from Jan. 27-Feb. 10, defeating four Southland opponents in a row. This season, the streak started at home against Lindenwood, continued at Louisiana-Monroe, and has since been two wins at the Farris Center against Hendrix and Little Rock.

Against the Trojans, sophomore guard Randrea Wright led the charge with an efficient 16 points, shooting 7-of-10 and dropping both of her free throws. Also scoring double-digits was freshman guard Parris Atkins, who notched 14 points for her fourth game of double-digit scoring, and senior guard Kayla Mitchell, who added ten. Wright and Mitchell were stone-cold killers in overtime, shooting 5-of-6 en route to all ten points in the extra period for the Sugar Bears.

Central Arkansas enjoyed its most efficient game against the Trojans, shooting 49 percent from the field, which ironically was a change in pace from the previous three wins, which relied heavily on offensive rebounds and free throws. Against Little Rock, the Sugar Bears shot only four freebies, hitting three of them. The defense also recorded a third-straight game holding its opponent under 42 percent, and is the third time an opponent has shot under 40 percent.

Alcorn State most recently dropped a game at Louisiana Tech on Saturday, falling by 11 points against the Lady Techsters. Down 16 at half, the Braves couldn't quite pull off the comeback, outscoring La Tech by five in the second half. Destiny Brown scored 21 points in 20 minutes off the bench, but the rest of the team struggled to find baskets.

Brown leads the team in scoring, netting 12.3 points per contest, also leading the way with 5.0 boards per game. A balanced offense in large part, nine Braves average at least four points per game. The Braves are solid on the offensive glass, pulling in 78 offensive rebounds, compared to allowing 79. But the real bright side for Alcorn State is on the defensive side of the ball, where the Braves force 14.5 turnovers per game from their opponents. Among all players, every Brave that has logged more than 20 minutes on the court has registered multiple steals, and Alcorn has only had one game this season committing more turnovers than its opponent.

Tip-off against Alcorn is set for 2 p.m. in Lorman, Miss. Fans can follow the game action by listening to Steve Owens on 91.3 The Bear, and live stats are available here.
