CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas women's basketball team returns home after a postponed game on Tuesday, holding court against the Little Rock Trojans on Saturday. Marking the Sugar Bears' part of the Governor's I-40 Showdown, tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Farris Center.
Saturday's game will also feature a celebration of legendary coach Ron Marvel. Coaching at Central Arkansas for 24 years from 1980-2004, Marvel is still the Sugar Bears' all-time winningest coach with 489 wins. Producing a winning record in every season of his career, he retired as the state of Arkansas' winningest coach in women's basketball history. On Saturday, the program will honor its longtime coach for his achievements and accomplishments roaming the sidelines.
Weather forced the Sugar Bears to return home empty handed from Lorman, Miss., where the team was supposed to play Alcorn St. With that game moved to next Tuesday, Central Arkansas heads into Saturday's matchup with a 3-2 record on the year.
It also means that the last time the Sugar Bears took the court was at home last Saturday against Hendrix.
Kierra Prim set career-highs in points (24) and rebounds (18), leading Central Arkansas to 2-0 at home this season.
Kinley Fisher and
Parris Atkins each added 10 points apiece, with Fisher knocking down a pair of three-pointers and Atkins coming away with a career-high four steals. Atkins also scored eight points in the final minute of the game, beating the Hendrix defense with her athleticism for easy buckets against the press.
Prim's statline earned her a second ASUN Newcomer of the Week award, as she rose to ninth in the conference in scoring and first in rebounding. She now averages 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, including 7.2 offensive rebounds per contest. Her offensive rebounding numbers have been key to the success of the team, producing second-chance opportunities all over the place. Through the three-game winning streak, the Sugar Bears have averaged 20.3 second chance points per game on over 18 offensive rebounds per game.
The Sugar Bears are 22-6 all-time against Little Rock, but have dropped the last three outings. Last season's meeting saw a freshman
Randrea Wright drop 12 points and pull in five boards.
The Trojans (1-4) are off to a bit of a slow start this season, partially due to their strong non-conference schedule. After defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff on opening day, Little Rock has since played three SEC schools (Ole Miss, Arkansas and Auburn) and Oral Roberts.
Most recently, Little Rock was on the road to face Auburn, where the team dropped a 70-48 outing. Faith Lee was the lone Trojan to notch double-digit scoring, logging 10 points before fouling out after 26 minutes on the court.
Junior guard Tia Harvey leads the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game, with double-figures in four of the five games. She also leads the team in steals, with six swipes through five games.
The Trojan offense has not started the season relying on the three-pointer, cashing in on just 6-of-34 in five outings. Four of those makes come off the hand of Toyosi Abiola, a graduate student from London, England. Adding context, Little Rock's opponents have shot 31-of-97 from distance, making nearly as many as the Trojans have attempted, and at nearly twice the efficiency.
Saturday's game is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off at the Farris Center. The game will be broadcast on
