CONWAY, Ark. – After eight days without a game, the Central Arkansas women's basketball team returns to the court on Monday, staying in-state to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tipping off at 1 p.m. at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff, Ark., the Sugar Bears wrap up a three-game road swing against the Golden Lions.
The Sugar Bears (4-4) are looking to get back in the win column after dropping their last outing at Tulsa. Freshman
Parris Atkins led the team in scoring, netting 12 in the loss. It marked the fifth game of double-figures for the newcomer, while also representing her third game of the season with multiple three-pointers. Atkins ranks second on the team in scoring, putting up 9.3 points per game.
Kierra Prim also saw a returning to form on the glass, as she pulled down 11 rebounds against the Golden Hurricane, including six offensive boards. Averaging 5.7 offensive rebounds per game, she ranks third in the entire country giving her team second-chance opportunities. Last week's game marked her fourth game of double-digit rebounds of the year.
The last time the Sugar Bears faced the Golden Lions, it was the second of two meetings in the 2020-21 season, nearly two years to the day of this season's game. The 72-54 win saw Central Arkansas shoot 44 free throws, more than twice the 19 shot by Pine Bluff. Though none of the current Sugar Bears were on this team, Central Arkansas hasn't lost to the Golden Lions since 2007 and are winners of five in a row.
Across the scorer's table on Monday, the Golden Lions enter the week 1-8, having not played a game since December 7, wrapping up a three-game stand in California. Pine Bluff's last game in the Golden State was against San Francisco, where the team dropped a 94-66 final score. Three Golden Lions scored in double-figures, led by Raziya Potter's 14. Potter is second on the team in scoring, putting up 9.1 points per game.
The Golden Lions don't have a single player averaging double-figure scoring on the year, but all 12 players that have at least played 60 minutes this season average at least 2.6. Maori Davenport has proven to be one of the team's more valuable pieces, averaging 9.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, pairing the near double-double averages with 14 blocks and seven steals in just six appearances. The 6-5 junior hasn't appeared since the end of November.
