JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fresh off a comeback win, the Sugar Bears basketball team has one more new opponent to face in Florida before returning home. The team faces Jacksonville on Saturday as the second half of the road trip. Game time against the Dolphins is set for 12 p.m. CT. at Swisher Gymnasium.
Last time out for the Sugar Bears, the girls mounted an epic comeback against North Florida. Down 17 points in the second quarter, the defense locked in for the third quarter, staying true to the midline and sending help defense when necessary, holding the Ospreys to just seven points and forcing nine turnovers. Playing off of the energy of the defense, the offense kicked into gear, shredding the deficit and taking a three-point lead going into the fourth. From there, free throws down the stretch kept the lead just large enough to seal the deal.
Hannah Langhi and
Randrea Wright both scored in double-figures against the Ospreys. Langhi, with a team-high 15, reached the double-digit mark for the 11
th time this season, and the fifth time in six games. With 13 points of her own, Wright also added six assists to her statline, marking the fourth time this season the freshman has dished out at least five assists.
On the season, Central Arkansas is still led in multiple categories by
Lucy Ibeh. Though other players have shown up in key moments, Ibeh has been able to use her athleticism to get to her spots in bunches throughout the year. Ibeh, the ASUN's leader in double-doubles with nine, also ranks fourth in the conference in scoring (14.4 ppg), first in rebounding (10.2 rpg), first in free throws attempted (91) and second in free throws made (60). The junior also ranks fourth in steals, with 36 to her name this season.
The Sugar Bears now find themselves in a tie for the 3-seed in the ASUN West, tied with Eastern Kentucky. With nine games left in the season, each game means more than the last, as potential tie-breaker scenarios start to unfold in preparation for the ASUN tournament.
Central Arkansas' opponent on Saturday is the Jacksonville Dolphins, who have won three straight ASUN games. Most recently, they narrowly defeated Lipscomb, taking a 58-51 win on Thursday. Jalisa Dunlap led the team in scoring, netting 16 with four three-pointers to her tally. Taylor Hawks added 11 points and eight rebounds, but the most telling stat was the turnovers, where Lipscomb turned it over 21 times, compared to Jacksonville's 11 miscues. The Dolphins were able to score 21 points off of those turnovers.
Hawks is the only player on Jacksonville's roster averaging double-digit scoring, dropping 10.8 points per contest for the Dolphins. Three other players average between eight and 10 points, but Jacksonville's defensive prowess makes up for the potential for off nights from the offense. The Dolphins allow the second-fewest points per game in the conference, giving up just 54.9 points per game. Six opponents have failed to reach 50 points, and only four have eclipsed 65 points this season.
Behind that intimidating defense is head coach Darnell Haney. Now with 43 wins under his belt, the fourth-year head coach leads a team that ranks in the top-25 in multiple defensive categories, including steals, opponent field goal percentage and turnovers forced.
Game time against the Dolphins is set for 12 p.m. CT from Swisher Gymnasium. The game will be broadcast on
