BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Central Arkansas beach volleyball team wrapped up its final tournament of the regular season on Saturday at the Blazer Beach Bash. The Beach Bears opened the day with a victory over Mercer and moved to 17-13 on the season. UCA dropped the second match of the day to UAB and fell to 17-14. The Beach Bears finished the Blazer Beach Bash 2-2.
Match One – UCA 4, Mercer 1
Payton Sproule and
Faith Hasness defeated Aggie Paskevic and Elena Sanfrey 21-10 and 21-6 in the No. 4 matchup and gave UCA an early 1-0 lead.
Shannon Stone and
Bria Garmon claimed a 21-9 and 21-11 victory over Hana Robertson and Ellie Miller in the No. 5 position.
Elli Merchant and Olivia Boeve knocked off
Aly Brinkley and
Kelsie Sager in the No. 2 contest 21-14 in both sets.
Julia Oravec and
Makenna Schmitt took the opening set against Maddie Nunley and Kacy Ogden 21-13 in the No. 3 matchup. The Mercer pair answered with a 21-19 win in the second. Oravec and Schmitt were unfazed and won the third set 15-10. The UCA tandem secured the match victory for UCA.
Gracie Garanich and Emilee Wissmach won the first set of the No. 1 matchup against
Evelyn Griffith and
Colene Hamilton 21-14. The UCA duo was resilient and answered with a 21-17 victory in the second. In the third and final set, Griffith and Hamilton used the momentum they gained and won the set 15-11, which gave UCA the 4-1 victory.
Match Two – UAB 3, UCA 2
Stone and Garmon put UCA on top after they defeated Jessica Ennis and Ella Alexander 21-16 and 21-13 in the No. 5 matchup.
The Blazers evened the match as Dylynn Otte and Emma Andraka bested Sproule and Hasnsess 21-18, 18-21, and 15-6 in the No. 4 position. Jenna Gathright and Sarah Dickson knocked off Oravec and Schmitt in the No. 3 pairing 21-9 and 21-14.
Brinkley and Sager won the first set of the No. 2 contest against Salli Napolitano and Adren Copping 21-19. The UAB pair won the second set 21-17 to force a third set. Brinkley and Sager bounced back and won the final set 15-13. Brinkley and Sager tied the match 2-2.
Rachel Tam and Mikayla Law-Heese won the first set of the No. 1 matchup against Griffith and Hamilton 21-16. The UCA tandem regrouped to win the second set 21-11. The UAB pair managed to win the final set 15-8 and claimed a 3-2 victory for the Blazers.
The Beach Bears return to the courts on Friday April 23, for the first day of the Southland Conference Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.
