CONWAY, Ark. – The Sugar Bears return home one more time before the holiday break, taking on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday. Central Arkansas, now 4-6 on the season, looks to move to 5-1 at the Farris Center. Tip-off against the Lady Lions is set for 1 p.m.
Central Arkansas dropped its last result, falling to an Arkansas team that connected on 11 three-pointers on Saturday.
Lucy Ibeh scored 17 points, tying the game-high for both squads, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor while pulling down nine rebounds. The Lagos, Nigeria native scored eight in the first quarter before rounding out her scoring with seven in the fourth.
Ibeh continues to be the spark offensively, leading the team with 13.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, while also leading the Sugar Bears with 22 steals. Saturday's game marked the sixth time this season she has scored at least 15 points and the seventh game in which she has scored double-figures. Ibeh's rebounding ranks first in the ASUN, and her steals are the fifth-highest total in the conference. After netting 17 points against Arkansas, her scoring average ranks sixth.
Outside of Ibeh, the Sugar Bears are getting contributions from some of the youth on the roster.
Randrea Wright leads the team with 26 assists, including three games of four-plus dimes.
Jayla Cody has three games of double-figure scoring, with a season-high of 12 points. More recently,
Lashiyah Fowler has 24 points in her last three outings, with four three-pointers to her name.
This meeting between the Sugar Bears and the Lady Lions marks the 37
th between the schools, with Central Arkansas holding a 24-16 edge in the series. Winners of nine of the last ten, Central Arkansas looks to close the calendar year with another home win over the Lady Lions.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit the Farris Center with a 4-5 record, currently on a two-game losing streak. Last time out, the Lady Lions fell to UAB at the Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala., losing 64-89. Despite 17 points from Zaay Green and eight more field goal attempts as a team, the Lady Lions allowed UAB to shoot 54 percent from the field, as opposed to their own 34 percent.
Green is one of four UAPB players to average double-figure scoring, leading the way with 14.7 points per game. She also leads the team in assists and steals, while ranking second on the team in rebounding. Sade Hudson (12.8 ppg), Khadijah Brown (12.1 ppg) and Joyce Kennerson (11.3 ppg) also score double-figures.
Head coach of the Lady Lions is Dawn Thornton. Now in her third season, she leads an improving team that has already defeated Southern Miss., Southeast Missouri State, and Tulane this season. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was selected to finish ninth in the SWAC preseason poll.
