CONWAY, Ark. – Back on the road for one more true road game before the holidays, the Sugar Bears head to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Game time at the Reynolds Center is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Central Arkansas looks to bounce back from a two-game skid after falling most recently to Little Rock. The Sugar Bears struggled offensively and look to put that one in the rear-view mirror.
Randrea Wright led the way with 12 points, her fifth game of double-digit scoring this season.
Gloria Fornah also found some success against the Trojans, making both field goals while committing zero turnovers. Defensively, her length allowed her to affect the Little Rock offense, leading to a career-best three steals.
The Sugar Bears still have plenty to hang their hats on this season. Despite the youth on the court, the team holds its opponents to just 36 percent shooting from the floor, while converting 42 percent of its own baskets. Beyond the three-point arc, Central Arkansas' opponents shoot a paltry 27.5 percent. The squad also outrebounds its opponents on average, pulling down five more boards per game than its foes.
Individually,
Lucy Ibeh leads the team in scoring, netting 14.6 points per game, the seventh-best mark in the ASUN. The Lagos, Nigeria native also leads the team with 9.6 rebounds per game, second in the ASUN, and tops the roster in steals, with 13.
Some of the freshmen are starting to pick up their numbers as they adapt to the college game.
Jayla Cody is second on the team in blocks (4) and field goal percentage (50 percent). Wright's 10.3 points per game are third on the team, and her five double-digit scoring games are tied for the most on the team.
Tulsa and Central Arkansas have faced off twice in the schools' histories. Each team has claimed one victory in the series, with the Sugar Bears taking the most recent of the contests, back in 2009.
On the other side, Tulsa has gotten off to a 7-0 start to its season after taking down Missouri S&T on Wednesday. Outscoring opponents by 16 points, the Golden Hurricane are one of the best teams in Division I at taking care of the ball, turning it over less than 10 times a game.
Maya Mayberry leads the Golden Hurricane in scoring, averaging 17.7 points per game. Through six outings, the senior guard has connected on 21 three-pointers, making her a threat from all over the court. As a team, Tulsa shoots 39.6 percent from three-point range.
The Golden Hurricane are under the command of first-year head coach Angie Nelp. Most recently an assistant at Arizona State, Nelp has been to postseason play eight times in her 13 years of Division I experience.
