JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Central Arkansas volleyball got off to a slow start in the ASUN Crossover as they dropped the first leg against Liberty 3-0.
In this matchup, the Sugar Bears continued to excel on the block as senior Madi Bowles and sophomore Macy Blackburn both totaled three total blocks. Bowles also provided the opportunities on offense as she posted seven kills alongside graduate student Amari Mitchell, who also posted seven kills. Sophomore Libero Lexi Gregory also helped in the match as she led the squad with 11 digs.
Set 1:
The Flames dominated the first set of the match as they hosted a hitting percentage of .407. That mark was one of the highest that the Sugar Bears had surrendered this year as they could not come close to matching it. Altogether it was a tough first set as the Sugar Bears eventually dropped it 25-12.
Set 2:
The second set played the match much closer as the Sugar Bears held a tight strand on how far the Flames could lead. However, that lead was maintained throughout as LU's magic number seemed to be six, as they were always that far ahead. While the UCA increased their hitting percentage from .037 to .125, the Flames did the same as they went from .407 to .441. That proved to be enough as they ended up winning the set 25-18.
Set 3:
The third set was the closest of all the sets as the Sugar Bears put up a fighting chance to hold off the sweep. In this set, sophomore Alexis Stumbough took it upon herself to make it close as she posted five kills. She was the one that nearly initiated the comeback as she posted a kill to make the set 24-23 in favor of LU. That comeback would not have been possible if UCA hadn't tied the matchup at 20-20 after a 3-0 rally. From there, the Flames outscored UCA and continued to extend the lead before Stumbough's kill. However, the Sugar Bears could not climb out of the trenches at this point as they eventually lost the final set 25-23.
Next, the Sugar Bears will face off against the lone undefeated conference squad as they battle Florida Gulf Coast (8-0) tomorrow at 11 a.m.
