JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite three close sets and a lot of fight from the Sugar Bears, the UCA volleyball team dropped its match against Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon. They'll have one more match on Sunday as a part of the ASUN Crossover.
Alexis Stumbough and
Jamiryana Hall led the Sugar Bears in kills with eight apiece and were followed closely by
April Conant's seven. Anna Meyers posted 30 assists, her fifth match of the season with 30 or more helpers. Stumbough and
Lexie Gregory recorded 11 digs each to lead the way for the Sugar Bears.
Set 1:
Set number one was extremely competitive, as neither team was able to make any big runs. The largest point-streak for either side was only three points, but for the most part, points were earned back-and-forth for most of the set. The Sugar Bears were able to take advantage of FGCU errors, earning 11 points on miscues from the Eagles. However, FGCU regained its composure to close out the first set on a 3-0 run.
Set 2:
Like the first set, one team was able to take advantage of errors from the other team. The bad part about the second set was that the errors were being committed by the Sugar Bears this time around. Timely attack errors kept UCA from building any momentum in the second set, ultimately dropping it 25-17.
Set 3:
The third set was the cleanest of the sets for both teams, as the Sugar Bears registered nine of their first 10 points via kills, rather than relying on mistakes from the Eagles. Stumbough came up big in the set, having four-straight kills to keep the Sugar Bears close. UCA was able to keep the score competitive throughout the set, but fell just short in snaring a set from FGCU, giving up a 4-1 run to close the match.
UCA will play one more match as part of the ASUN Crossover in Jacksonville, Fla., facing off against the host-school Jacksonville (4-17) on Sunday. Match time against the Dolphins is set for 11 a.m. CT.
