NEW ORLEANS — On the heels of a dominant week that resulted in a pair of wins by a combined 45 points to extend their winning streak to three, the Sugar Bears look to carry that momentum on the road this week as they take on New Orleans on Wednesday before a clash with Sam Houston State on Saturday.
The Sugar Bears (11-11, 7-6 Southland) will be trying to even the season series with the Privateers (12-10, 8-5), who won 49-37 in the Farris Center on Jan. 8 in a game in which the Sugar Bears scored just three points in a quarter twice and shot just 32.7 percent while committing 24 turnovers.
The Privateers have dropped two of their last three games – both losses coming on the road at Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin – but have won 5 of their last 6 at Lakefront Arena, where they are 7-3 overall on the season.
UNO enters the game sitting at 5th place in the Southland Conference standings with seven games remaining, while the Sugar Bears are one game behind the Privateers and could pull even with a victory on Wednesday. Southeastern Louisiana sits between the teams in the standings, a half-game back of UNO at 7-5.
The Sugar Bears come in having won last week's games by a score of 123-78 in a pair of games in which they outrebounded their foes 104-56 and held them to 22.9 percent shooting for the week, while outscoring them 68-18 in the pains and 32-5 in second-chance points.
Briana Trigg averaged 16.5 points and 9 rebounds for the week, highlighted by a 24-point, 11-rebound effort against McNeese on Saturday. Twin sister
Ayanna Trigg has pulled down 59 rebounds over her last six games, an average of 9.8 per game. Junior forward
Hannah Langhi, who had 12 points and 17 rebounds against Lamar, has averaged 9 points and 8.3 rebounds over the last three games, while senior guard
Taylor Sells averaged 10.5 points and 7 rebounds in last week's wins.
The Privateers are led offensively by Rehema Franklin at 13.8 points per game, on the strength of a team-best 35 3-pointers and 64 free throws. Asia Woods averages 11 points and 7.7 rebounds (including 11.5 and 9.1 in conference play), with Larry Whitley just behind at 7.2 rebounds per game to go with a team-high 39 blocks and 43 steals. The Privateers have 222 steals on the season, tied for 5th-most in the Southland and their 10.1 per game ranks them 44th nationally.
The Sugar Bears rank 21st nationally in scoring defense, allowing 55.4 points per game, and are 39th in 3-point defense with opponents shooting just 27.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Privateers, who were 1-for-19 from long range in the first meeting, rank 276th nationally and 8th in the Southland in 3-point shooting at 28.4 percent.
Wednesday's meeting will be the 5th time the Sugar Bears and Privateers have met at Lakefront Arena, with the Sugar Bears having won all four previous meetings.
