LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Bears fell short for the second straight week as they lost on a game-ending goal in overtime to No. 4 Kentucky (3-1).
UCA falls to 0-2 as they suffer a second straight golden goal loss to a non-conference opponent.
After falling late in their first game of the season to UAB, the Bears decided to take advantage of this road matchup early on. In the first seven minutes of the match, UCA pushed forward and scored to give them the 1-0 advance, just 6:48 into the first half. The advantage happened as senior
Kasper Andersen received the pass from senior
Vicent Abaso and netted the shot. For Andersen, this was his first goal of the season and fifth in his career. Similarly, Abaso's assist was his first points of the year and is his sixth assist in his career.
That is all it took for UCA to head into halftime with a lead against this Conference USA foe. While the Bears did not get many chances, they made them worthwhile as the Wildcats outshot UCA 5-3, but fell behind in the shots on goal category that favored the Bears 2-0.
For most of the match, UCA kept it just out of reach, before Kentucky eventually netted their own goal in the 73rd minute. That goal would be a deciding factor as neither team could amount momentum to score again before they headed into overtime. Similar to the game against UAB, the Bears could get a couple of quality shots off in overtime, but they inevitably fell in the 96th minute on a golden goal.
Quote from head coach
Ross Duncan:
"I was pleased with how we approached this match. We competed really well right from the start and made life very difficult for Kentucky. A lot of guys got important minutes today and I know that will carry through conference play."
"Soren did a great job providing service for us and Kasper was dangerous in the attack. I also thought Pablo made a big statement today about his role as an important player for us going forward this year."
