CONWAY, Ark. _ Another night, another first-place team for the University of Central Arkansas Bears to face.
The Bears (5-12, 4-2) will host the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (13-3, 4-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Farris Center, four days after knocking off co-Southland Conference leader Sam Houston State 89-82 at the Farris Center.
The Bears will also face co-leader Nicholls on Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux, La., to complete the trifecta.
UCA and SFA split their two meetings last season, with SFA winning a thriller in overtime, 105-99 in Nacogdoches in January, and UCA dominating the rematch 92-74 in Conway in February. The Bears have only beaten the Lumberjacks twice in 21 previous meetings, but both have come in the past five matchups.
The Bears ahd four players in double figures in the first meeting last season, led by
DeAndre Jones with 29 points (5 of 11 from three-point range). SFA countered with 33 points and 16 rebounds from Kevon Harris (4 of 5 from beyond the arc). Senior
Thatch Unruh topped the Bears in the second game with 20 points, while Jones and freshman
Eddy Kayouloud scored 19 points each.
The Bears did most of their damage from the perimeter in the two games, hitting a combined 25 of 57 three-point attempts (44 percent). The Lumberjacks were dominant inside, outscoring the Bears 86-58 in points in the paint, while also hitting 13 threes, but just 2 of 15 in the game in Conway.
There were also plenty of fouls to go around in the two meetings, with UCA called for 45 and SFA whistled for 49. UCA shot a combined 67 free throws (making 48) while SFA shot 60 (making 42).Â
This season, the Lumberjacks lead the SLC in points per game at 83.3, scoring margin (+15.1), rebounding (37.9) and rebound margin (+8.5). SFA, which knocked off perennial power Duke in overtime back in November, are led by Harris, who averaged 18.1 points per game, second in the conference.Â
The Bears, who have won two of their last three SLC games, have four players scoring in double figures, led by junior transfer guard
Rylan Bergersen (14.5 ppg) and Jones (13.8). Kayouloud is next at 13.0, followed by junior center
Hayden Koval (11.4), who leads the SLC and is ranked in the top five in the country in blocked shots at 3.4 per game.
Jones returned to the starting lineup against SHSU after coming off the bench for three games after returning from an ankle injury that put him out for more than a month. Since returning, Jones has averaged 22.2 points per game, made 15 of 28 (53.6 percent) from three-point range and 30 of 37 (81 percent) at the free-throw line. He scored a career-high 33 points in the upset of Sam Houston on Saturday.
The game is the second "Salute to Service" night at the Farris Center, with all current or former military and first responders admitted free. Also, all general admission tickets are only $1 on Wednesday night. The game will be carried live with Justin Acri at ucasports.com.
