BEARS STEAL MATCH IN FINAL MOMENTS

CONWAY, Ark. –  In a match that appeared to be heading for extra time, Central Arkansas was able to top Incarnate Word in the final moments and remain unbeaten on the season.

After falling behind early, Central Arkansas (2-0-1) equalized in the 24th minute and went on to win courtesy of a 90th minute minute penalty kick.

First Half

  • Despite having very little possession to begin the match, Incarnate Word would still take an early 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute after catching the Bears out with too many numbers forward, capping off a classic counter attack.
  • The Bears would come very close to equalizing in the 17th minute after a Vicent Abaso cross was headed home by Niklas Brodacki, who was unfortunately about an inch offside, denying him his third goal of the season.
  • The Bears continued to threaten however, and would equalize in the 24th minute on a perfectly worked set piece that saw center back Alberto Suarez bullet home a header into the bottom corner on a cross from Soren Jensen
  • Suarez nearly grabbed his second goal of the match on a very similar sequence in the 33rd minute that saw him connect another header on target off a Jensen cross. Quick reflexes from the UIW denied Suarez and also the follow-up effort from Ole Kjoerholt as the match remained 1-1.
  • UCA's Marc Olsen was called into action in the 38th minute, denying the Cardinals from regaining the lead on a spectacular save diving down to his right side. The first of three saves for Olsen.

Second Half

  • UCA would create the first chance of the second half in the 48th minute on a Matthias Bendiksen strike that forced another save from the UIW keeper.
  • The Bears would again come close to taking the lead in the 65th minute after great combination play between Brodacki and Moaid Ankir left Brodacki in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper where Brodacki rounded it off and saw his strike get cleared off the goaline by a UIW defender.
  • A free kick opportunity for the Bears in the 73rd minute nearly saw the net bulging as Katsu Kimishima's dipping effort flew just wide of the net.
  • In the final opportunity of regulation, UCA's Kyosuke Kubota found himself isolated with an Incarnate Word defender just inside the penalty area. Kubota's quick feet led to the UIW diving in and he earned his team a penalty with less than a minute remaining in the match. Brodacki would step up and bury the penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net, completing the comeback for the Bears.

UCA finished the match with 18 total shots, hitting seven of them on frame. Marc Olsen was big again tonight for the Bears as he finished the match with three big time saves.
Coach Duncan Quotes

"It's always tough in college soccer to go down a goal and still scratch out a victory so I was proud of the way we responded and I thought we stayed really level-headed when we conceded the goal. Incarnate Word is a very good team. They were 2-0 on the road coming into tonight and they have some really good players."
