Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Marcellus Hill

BEARS FALL TO SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, IL – In a match where the Central Arkansas men's soccer team seemingly dominated all aspects, the Bears still came up short in a 2-0 defeat courtesy of a career night from SIUE keeper Luis Martorell, who finished the match with 12 saves.

The Bears had a class showing in possession, seeing over 60 percent compared to less than 40 for SIUE. UCA also saw their fair share of scoring opportunities in the match, finishing with 18 total shots and hitting 13 on frame.

First Half

  • UCA center back Alberto Suarez nearly opened the scoring account for the Bears in the second minute of the match as he forced an early save from Martorell on a hard hit strike down the center.
  • Niklas Brodacki found himself in a great scoring position in the 11th minute when a ball across the six yard box found the foot of the Sweedish striker, but again was denied by Martorell.
  • UCA showed patience and possessed for the majority of the first half, but was unable to generate anymore chances as the two squads headed into half deadlocked at zero goals apiece.

Second Half

  • Despite having zero shots on target in the first half, the Cougars were able to take advantage of their early opportunity in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
  • The 56th minute nearly saw the Bears equalize in spectacular fashion after Brodacki's bicycle kick effort was denied by Martorell, who quickly dove to his right side to keep it out.
  • The 65th minute saw the Cougars double their advantage on a strike from about 25 yards out that hit the post on its way in, leaving UCA keeper Marc Olsen with no chance.
  • The Bears' final chance came in the 82nd minute when Kasper Andersen beat his defender and rounded the keeper before having his shot cleared off the line.

On Deck

The Bears will be back in action Tuesday night as they travel to Dallas, Texas to take on top 25 opponent SMU.
