CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears split a doubleheader on Friday at Bear Stadium, beating South Dakota State 8-3 and losing to Missouri 4-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener, senior righthander Cody Davenport threw two-hit ball for seven innings, allowing no runs and striking out six. The Bears (4-7) turned eight hits into eight runs, with senior Jay Anderson and junior Josh Ragan accounting for three RBI each.
The Bears, after an early 1-0 lead on Anderson's bases-loaded walk in the first inning, put up four more runs in the third against SDSU ace Brady Stover, who allowed five earned runs, walked five and lasted just 2 1/3 innings. In the fourth, Anderson had a two-run double to left center, Alonso Bibiano added an RBI single and Beau Orlando added another to make it 5-0.
UCA added three more runs in the seventh inning on Josh Ragan's three-run bomb to left field that scored Anderson and Tyler Smith. Davenport (1-1) got the victory with Stover (1-2) taking the loss. Anderson went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and and 2 runs scored.
UCA starter Mark Moyer held the Mizzou Tigers in check for four innings, striking out a career-high eight before running into trouble in the fifth. The Tigers, who scored once in the top of the first, put up single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to beat the Bears. UCA third baseman Christian Brasher had UCA's first base hit in the third inning off UM starter T.J. Sikkema, a triple to dead center field.Â
However, Sikkema overcame that and ended up going 6 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out 9 and allowing just 4 hits. The Bears had just four hits against Sikkema and reliever Cameron Dulle, who earned the save with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Tigers had eight hits, including two each by Chad McDaniel and Mark Vierling.Â
The Bears will face South Dakota State again Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., weather permitting
