MILWAUKEE, Wis.. _ The two college basketball teams that produced the highest scoring brother duo in NCAA history will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fiserv Forum when the University of Central Arkansas Bears take on the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Former UCA guard Jordan Howard and his younger brother, Marquette's Markus Howard, became the top scoring brother duo in history last week when Markus Howard scored 32 points in the Golden Eagles' victory over North Dakota State. That put the Howard's career point total at 4,738, topping Steph and Seth Curry, who tallied 4,736 points during their careers at Davidson (Steph) and Duke/Liberty (Seth).
The Howards are in good company on the list, ahead of third-place Tyler and Ben Hansbrough (4,523), Larry and Eddie Bird (4,405) and Chuck and Wesley Person (4,377).
The bad news for the Bears is Jordan Howard graduated two years ago after scoring 2,524 points and making 386 three-pointers, both school and state collegiate records, while Markus Howard is just 12 games into his senior season and is second in the nation in scoring at 25.9 points per game. Both Howards are the leading career scorers at their respective schools, with Markus Howard breaking that mark in the Golden Eagles' season opener back in November. Jordan Howard topped UCA's career scoring record by 367 points. Jordan Howard still has family bragging rights, for now, with 2,524 career points to Markus Howard's 2,214.
The Golden Eagles are 9-2 overall with losses to Wisconsin and No. 5/8 Maryland, and are third in the nation in three-point shooting at 41.9 percent per game. Howard has connected at a 46.6 percent clip while teammate Sacar Anim is even better at 47.1 percent and Brendan Bailey (son of former NBA player Thurl Bailey) is at 42.5 percent. The Golden Eagles, who lost to Murray State and All-American Ja Morant in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago as a No. 5 seed, open Big East play on Jan. 1 at Creighton.
The Bears, 3-9 overall but winners of two straight, have already played a pair of Southland Conference games and have their first 2-0 start since joining the league in 2006-07. UCA beat Incarnate Word 88-82 in overtime on Dec. 18, then beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 71-67 last Saturday, both at the Farris Center. The Bears, under the direction of associate head coach
Anthony Boone, return to SLC play on Jan. 2 at Houston Baptist. Â
 Sophomore guard/forward
Eddy Kayouloud is leading the Bears in both scoring (16.3) and rebounding (7,2) and was named the SLC Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 22.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in UCA's two victories last week. Junior transfer
Rylan Bergersen has been a steady force as well, averaging 14.3 points and 4.6 rebounds a game, while junior center
Hayden Koval is averaging 11.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and a league-high 3.6 blocked shots per game, which ranks fifth in the nation.
The Bears make 6.8 three-pointers a game compared to 9.9 for the Golden Eagles. UCA's most prolific game from beyond the arc this season was 12 three-pointers at Georgetown, another team from the Big East. The Golden Eagles connected for a season-high 16 three-pointers against Grambling. Individually, redshirt freshman
Jaxson Baker leads the Bears with 16 three-pointers, followed by 15 from Koval and 11 each from Bergersen and senior
Aaron Weidenaar. Howard leads Marquette with 41, followed by Bailey with 17, Anim with 16 and Koby McEwen with 15. McEwen is the only one shooting less than 40 percent from the arc.
The game will be carried on The Bear 91.3 and 103.7 The Buzz with Justin Acri and on national television on FS1.
