CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — After opening Southland Conference play with a 47-37 win at UIW on Wednesday, Central Arkansas will look to make it a sweep in the opening week of conference play as they take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at 1:00pm on Saturday.
The Sugar Bears (5-5, 1-0 Southland) enter Saturday's contest riding a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five. The Islanders (7-3, 1-0) opened up league play with a 55-49 win over Nicholls on Wednesday, and are 5-0 at home this season. The Islanders, who were 8-10 in Southland games last season and advanced to the finals of the conference tournament, were selected 4th in the Southland preseason poll this season.
The Islanders sport the Southland's 5th highest-scoring offense at 65.7 points per game, and are 4th in scoring defense at 57.7. The Sugar Bears lead in that category, allowing 52.7 points per game – including just 35.3 over the last three games – and rank 14th nationally. The matchup also pits two of the league's best rebounding teams against each other, with the Islanders ranking 14th nationally in rebound margin at 12.5 per game and 1st in the Southland in rebounds per game, while the Sugar Bears have out-rebounded their last three opponents by 57 and are 4th in the league in rebounds per game.
The Sugar Bears lead the series with the Islanders 9-7, though A&M-Corpus Christi won last season's meeting 73-65 in Conway. The Sugar Bears had won the previous five meetings, and have won 5 of the 8 previous meetings in Corpus Christi. In last season's matchup, the Islanders' Dalesia Booth scored 33 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead A&M-Corpus Christi in the victory. Booth leads the Islanders in scoring this season at 13 points per game and averages 5.4 rebounds. Alexes Bryant is the Islanders' second-leading scorer at 12.1 per contest while grabbing a team-best 7.4 rebounds.
It will be the Sugar Bears' final game before breaking for the holidays, with the home Southland opener on deck on New Year's Day at 1:00pm in the Farris Center.
