• The Sugar Bears were picked 3rd in the Southland preseason poll, while the Cardinals were picked to repeat as conference champion. Last season the Sugar Bears finished 3rd at 14-4 while the Cardinals won the Southland crown with a 17-1 mark.
• Lamar's lone Southland loss last season came at the hands of the Sugar Bears, who won 51-39 in Conway. In that game the Sugar Bears limited the Cardinals to 26.8 percent shooting (15 of 56) and outrebounded Lamar by 11.
