SUGAR BEARS TO BATTLE YALE FOR WBI CHAMPIONSHIP THURSDAY

CONWAY — Nearly four weeks ago, Central Arkansas seniors Taylor Baudoin, Kierra Jordan and Angel Williams were recognized on Senior Day, playing their final game in the Farris Center.

Or so they thought.

Thanks to lengthy postseason run, the seniors have been able to extend their careers by a few weeks and have picked up three more wins on their home court during their march through the Women's Basketball Invitational. But Thursday night at 7, there is no question – they will be playing their final game in the Farris Center.

And this time, for a championship.

The Sugar Bears (25-9) will wrap up their season hoping to secure a championship of some fashion for the third consecutive season as they meet Yale (18-13) in the championship game of the WBI – looking for their first national postseason tournament title and the first in Southland Conference history.

While the Sugar Bears come in as one of 17 Division I programs to have won at least 25 games in each of the last three seasons, they'll be meeting a Yale squad enjoying its best season in program history with a program-record 18 wins and the deepest run an Ivy League team has made in a national postseason tournament.

The Bulldogs advanced to the title game by coming back from 11 down with two minutes to play against South Alabama in Saturday's semifinal game, winning 76-74 in overtime. They had previously defeated Northeastern and Binghamton in the first two rounds.

The Bulldogs, who were 8-6 in Ivy League play this season and 10-5 in road games, averaged 67.6 points per game and give up 65.3. The Sugar Bears come in with the nation's No. 2 scoring defense at 50.8 points per game, and are on pace to break the Southland Conference record of 51.6 – needing to allow more than 80 points on Thursday to fall short of the record. The Bulldogs have topped 80 twice this season, getting 82 each in wins over TCU and Colgate.

Yale has three players averaging double figures in scoring on the season, led by senior forward Jen Berkowitz at 14.4 points per game, with senior guard Tamara Simpson at 13.7 and sophomore guard Roxy Barahman at 13.6. Berkowitz also tops the team at 7.0 rebounds per game, while Simpson – the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year – averages 4.3 steals and Barahman 4.1 assists per game. Berkowitz was a first-team All-Ivy League selection, with Simpson selected to the second team and Barahman honorable mention.

The Sugar Bears will be looking to complete their Postseason Run presented by First Security Bank with a perfect run through the WBI on their home floor, where they are 41-5 (.891) over the last three seasons and 15-2 this year. The Sugar Bears will also be seeking their 9th postseason victory over the past three seasons, having gone 8-3 in postseason play beginning with the 2016 Southland Conference Tournament.

Baudoin comes into her final game in a Sugar Bear uniform with 1,205 points and 622 rebounds in three seasons at Central Arkansas, with a chance to finish as the 4th-leading scorer and 3rd-leading rebounder in the program's Division I history despite transferring in after her freshman season. Her 15.9 points per game average this season is the best for a Sugar Bear since Megan Herbert's 19.8 in 2012-13.

Williams, the lone four-year player among the senior class, will be going for her 97th victory in a Sugar Bear uniform, the most for any player in the program's Division I era. Jordan will look to close out her Central Arkansas career with the fourth-highest career scoring average and second-highest rebounding average in the program's Division I history, coming in averaging 12.2 and 7.4 during her time in the purple and gray.

The game can be seen on the Southland Digital Network and heard on The Bear 91.3, with pregame show beginning at 6:40.
