ABILENE, Texas — After being eliminated from a Top-2 seed and a double bye for next month's Southland Conference tournament with Wednesday's loss to Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas will look to bounce back on the road at Abilene Christian on Saturday with a chance to assure themselves a Top-4 seed and a bye to the tournament quarterfinals.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Sugar Bears (18-8, 11-4) sit third in the Southland standings ahead of New Orleans at 10-6 and both ACU (15-10, 9-6) and A&M-Corpus Christi also with a 9-6 league record.
The Sugar Bears will be going for the season sweep of the Wildcats after having won the season's first meeting 63-45 in Conway on Jan. 20. They'll do so against an ACU team that has dropped its last two and three of its last four, with the lone win a 58-56 victory over Incarnate Word, which is 4-22 overall and 3-12 in Southland play.
In the season's first meeting,
Kierra Jordan had 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Sugar Bears. Going back to last season, Jordan has averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds against the Wildcats.
Taylor Baudoin had 24 points and 6 rebounds in that win, making 10 of her 15 field goal attempts.
In that game, the Sugar Bears held the Wildcats – the Southland's most prolific 3-point shooting team – to just 3 of 13 from long range. In ACU's remaining conference games, the Wildcats have knocked down an average of 9.9 per game.
Baudoin ranks 7th in Southland games in scoring at 15.7 per game and is 9th in rebounding, pulling down 7 per game. Jordan ranks 19th and 2nd in those categories at 12.5 and 9.6, and the two are both in the top five in field goal percentage with Jordan 3rd at 52.9 percent and Baudoin 5th at 50.0.
Following Saturday's game, the Sugar Bears conclude the regular season with the league's bottom two teams, visiting Sam Houston State (4-21, 1-15) on Wednesday before concluding at home next Saturday against Northwestern State (7-19, 2-13).
Winning two of the final three would get the Sugar Bears to the 20-win mark for the third straight season and sixth time in the final nine seasons, which would be the most in the Southland during that period.
