JACKSON, Miss. — After starting the season with consecutive wins over lower-division foes at home in the Farris Center, the Sugar Bears get their first test both away from home and against Division I competition on Tuesday when they take on Jackson State at the Williams Assembly Center.
The Sugar Bears (2-0) will meet a Lady Tigers squad that enters 0-2 with road losses at Memphis and UT Arlington. Jackson State nearly came away with a victory in the opener at Memphis, falling 68-67 in a game in which JSU led by four with just more than 3:00 to play before Memphis closed by outscoring JSU 10-5 in the waning moments.
In that game, 5-foot-7 guard Christina Ellis had team highs of 16 points and 9 rebounds to go with 5 assists; while 6-foot posts Marneisha Hamer and Antoinette Womack combined for 24 with 14 and 10, respectively. JSU got 46 of its 67 points in the paint, and forced Memphis into 24 turnovers.
JSU did not fare as well in its second game, losing 99-63 at UT Arlington after committing 27 turnovers that led to 32 points for the Mavs. Hamer led JSU with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Ellis had 11 & 5 but also committed 7 turnovers. Kaisah Lucky had 12 points for JSU.
The Sugar Bears are 2-1 all-time against the Lady Tigers, losing 75-58 in the only other meeting in Jackson in 2008. The teams met the following season in Conway, a 60-46 Sugar Bear victory, and met again in 2014 in Macon, Ga. – a game the Sugar bears won 56-45.
Through two games, the Sugar Bears are holding opponents to 37 points per game and just 31.6 percent shooting. Junior guard
Taylor Sells leads Central Arkansas with 12 points and 3 assists per game, is tied with freshman
Shay Johnson for the team lead with 5 steals and is tied for 2nd in rebounds at 5 per game, just behind
Hannah Langhi at 5.5.
Following Tuesday night's game, the Sugar Bears return home to take on South Alabama in the Farris Center next Saturday at 2:00pm.
