Conway - In their second to last non-conference game, Central Arkansas (5-4-2, 2-1-0 MVC) hosted American Conference opponent Memphis (5-3-4) in a game that saw a two goal draw after 110 minutes of play. A game that was originally scheduled for 7:00 PM was bumped up to a 2:30 PM start in order to avoid potential inclement weather.
Â
In what was a fairly slow start to the match, neither team posted a shot on goal during the first 26 minutes, with Central Arkansas'
Soren Jensen finding the frame in the 27
th minute to force a save from Memphis keeper Tyler Hoffman to kick off the action. A corner kick from Jensen in the 30th minute saw
Chris Holmes flick the ball across the box with his head, finding teammate
Ole Kjoerholt, who headed it home from six yards out, guiding it just over the fingertips of Hoffman and giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Â
It took less than a minute for the Tigers to respond, as Memphis' Edgar Alaniz found himself streaking down the right touchline and would square the ball across the face of goal. It would finally end up at the feet of Alexandros Ierides, who curled it into the bottom right corner on a beautiful one time finish and just like that the score was tied again.
Â
Another Jensen effort in the 32nd minute was matched by Hoffman as he recorded his second save of the afternoon. Ten minutes later, Memphis would take the lead, with Brantley Bice received a pass from Ierides at the top of the 18 yard box. From there Bice would see a curling effort smash into the side netting on an almost perfect finish from just inside the 18 and the Tigers would go into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Sebastian Thomsson would be called into action for the first time a minute into the second half as he was forced to match an attempt from Bice from just inside the 18 yard box. From there would be a 20 minute spell that saw neither team post a shot on target. In the 62nd minute however, Central Arkansas drew level again after
Moiad Ankir's strike from inside the penalty area ricocheted off a Memphis defender and found its way into the back of the net, evening the score at 2-2 thanks to the own goal
Â
Central Arkansas would create a flurry of chances including a penalty kick from
Daltyn Knutson that was saved in the 71st minute, but were unable to find the game-winner, sending the match to extra time.
Â
With 10 seconds remaining in the first half of extra time, Central Arkansas had a promising opportunity to grab a golden goal. Jensen found himself in a a two-on-one break and drew the keeper out of the net before laying it off to
Niklas Brodacki who would take advantage by slamming it home. However, Brodacki was called offside and the score remained 2-2.
Â
That score would hold until the final whistle, despite a 28-11 Central Arkansas shooting advantage.
Â
Central Arkansas head coach Ross Duncan commented on his team's feeling after the match.
Â
Â
"I think the frustration we're feeling is because we did enough to win the game. The performance we put in was good enough to beat a very good Memphis team, but this helps us moving forward," said Duncan.
Â
Central Arkansas travels to Green Bay Saturday in what will be their last non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
