Conway – The Central Arkansas Bears returned to action at Farris Field on Saturday looking to finish off a sweep of Southeastern Louisiana. After honoring seniors
Tylor Dodson,
Kayla Gomness,
Taylor Kuhn,
Bailey Reynolds,
Hannah Stirton,
Randi Wallace, and
Briana Whisenhunt, Central Arkansas did just that, taking down the Lady Lions 5-1.
As they did in the first two games of the series, SLU (22-25, 9-12 SLC) struck first, thanks to an RBI groundout from first baseman Mahalia Gibson in the top of the first. Central Arkansas (20-30, 10-11 SLC) would answer the call though, taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when shortstop
Kate Myers led off with a walk. After a wild pitch moved Myers to second and right fielder
Morgan Felts picked up a walk of her own, third baseman
Audrey Pratt laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the pair into scoring position.
Stirton would give the Bears the lead by roping a single through the left side to score both Myers and Felts before moving to third on another wild pitch. Whisenhunt took advantage of the pitching miscue, reaching on a fielder's choice that saw Stirton slide around the tag at home.
Whisenhunt delivered again in the fourth inning, following a double from Stirton with a double of her own to make it 4-1, before second baseman
Krissy Fontillas capped the game's scoring with by driving in pinch runner Brianna McArthur with a single in the fifth.
Gomness (13-15) picked up her 19
th complete game of the season to earn the win, limiting the Lady Lions to a single unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out five.
???????Stirton turned in a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two more, while Whisenhunt was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Central Arkansas heads to Abilene, Texas for a three-game set against Abilene Christian next weekend. The Bears and Wildcats will play a doubleheader at 5:00 PM on Friday evening before wrapping up the series with a single game at 12:00 PM on Saturday.
