PRIVATEERS EVEN SERIES WITH WIN OVER BEARS


    CONWAY, Ark. _ A pair of big innings carried the New Orleans Privateers to an 11-4 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Saturday in Southland Conference action at Bear Stadium.

    The Privateers (14-10, 4-4) scored five runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to rally from a 4-1 deficit and even the series at 1-1. Game 3 is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

    The Bears (11-14, 2-6) led 4-1 after scoring three runs in the second inning and another in the fourth, but were shut out the final five innings by a combination of UNO starter Bryan Warznek (4-0), who got the victory, and reliever Reeves Martin, who picked up the save.

    In the third, Eddy Sanchez started it with a base hit to center. After a strikeout, shortstop Brooks Balisterri hit a ball to left field that scooted past UNO's Jay Robinson, allowing Sanchez to score from first. Michael Haun followed with an infield single before Keaton Presley had a bunt single that first baseman Dakota Dean threw into right, bringing in two more runs for a 3-0 UCA lead.

    UCA got another run in the fourth on Presley's sacrifice fly that scored catcher William Hancock. who had led off with a single.

    The Privateers, who finished with 14 hits, got three of them in the sixth, including a three-run home run from Orynn Veillon, and also took advantage of two hit batters and a wild pitch. to take the lead for good. In the seventh, UNO scored four runs on five hits to put the game out of reach.

    UCA junior Tyler Gray (2-3) took the loss in relief of starter Jacob Murray. UCA used four pitchers and all four allowed at least a run.

    Jansen McCurdy, Hunter Strong, Hancock and Balisterri all had two hits each for the Bears, who had won three consecutive games.
