BEARS RUN-RULE PRIVATEERS, TAKE SERIES 2-1

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears rode the pitching arm of Mark Moyer and an eight-run fifth inning to a 10-0, seven-inning victory over the New Orleans Privateers on Sunday at Bear Stadium to take their Southland Conference series 2-1.

Moyer, a redshirt freshman from Russellville who missed the 2016 season with an arm injury, went the distance, allowing just five hits and striking out four to record UCA's first complete game of the season. Moyer worked around a seventh-inning error to end the game with consecutive popups.

The Bears (12-14, 3-6) sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning against a combination of four UNO pitchers, scoring eight times to push their lead to 9-0. A single run in the bottom of the sixth inning on catcher William Hancock's RBI single gave the Bears the 10-run cushion.

UCA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on base hits from Keaton Presley and Jansen McCurdy and a safety squeeze bunt by Rigo Aguilar against UNO starter Rafael Martinez (2-1), who took the loss. He allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

In the fifth, junior centerfielder Michael Haun opened the inning with a base hit to center and then stole second. After an out, Jansen McCurdy singled to center, sending Haun to third. Sophomore Hunter Strong then doubled over the center fielder's head to score both runners. Matt Gillis replaced Martinez and Aguilar greeted him with an RBI single to bring in Strong.

Gillis then hit Hancock with a pitch and walked Eddy Sanches to load the bases and end his afternoon. William Griffin replaced him and promptly walked Cody Davenport to make it 5-0. Shortstop Brooks Balisterri came through with a two-run single up the middle for a 7-0 lead. Presley finished off the inning with a two-run base hit that brought in Davenport and Balisterri.

Presley went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored from the top spot in the lineup. Strong finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, while McCurdy and Balisterri added two hits apiece, with Balisterri picking up two RBI.

UCA concludes its six-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 6 p.m. at Bear Stadium. The Bears will then play seven straight road games, beginning next week at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La.
