SUGAR BEARS DOMINATE HBU FOR 12TH STRAIGHT ON RECORD-SETTING DAY

CONWAY — It wasn't enough for Central Arkansas to simply break its program Division I-era record for longest winning streak on Saturday. The Sugar Bears decided to rewrite a couple other pages of the record book while they were at it, routing Houston Baptist 83-39 for their largest margin of victory ever in a Southland Conference game.

The 44-point win eclipses the 41-point margin in an 84-43 victory over Northwestern State in the Sugar Bears' Southland Conference championship season of 2012 – the win that started the Sugar Bears' previous record 11-game winning streak that fell by the wayside on Saturday.

With Saturday's win, the Sugar Bears find themselves three games away from claiming at least a share of the league title once again as they sit in first place at 13-2 in conference play and 21-4 overall.

During the course of the victory, senior Raquel Logan blocked the 97th shot of her career, passing 2014 Southland Conference Player of the Year Courtney Duever to give her the program's D-I era record. It is the most for any Sugar Bear since UCA Sports Hall of Famer Angela Watson's 143 from 1992-96.

The Sugar Bears wasted little time on Saturday as they got out to a 19-6 lead over the Huskies (5-19, 3-11 Southland) after one quarter, and led by as many as 22 until an HBU 3-pointer just before the buzzer made it 41-22 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Sugar Bears clamped down on the Huskies – holding HBU to just one field goal (1 of 11, 9.1 percent) in the period, outscoring HBU 20-4 to build the lead up to 61-26.

The Sugar Bears closed it out with a 22-point fourth quarter, outscoring HBU 22-13 while shooting 58.3 percent (7 of 12) for their most lopsided league win since joining the Southland for the 2006-07 season, and their most in any conference game since a 94-48 win over Little Rock during the 1976-77 season in the Arkansas Women's Intercollegiate Sports Association, the program's inaugural season restarting following a 45-year hiatus.

Maggie Proffitt was 4-of-5 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 21 points, giving her an average of 23.5 points per game against the Huskies this season – making 9 of 14 3-point attempts (64.3 percent).

Kierra Jordan – who had 22 points and 7 rebounds in the Sugar Bears' first meeting with the Huskies – followed with 15 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday for her second double-double of the season while also blocking a pair of shots. Taylor Baudoin had 11 points, 7 rebounds and a team-high 3 steals, and Logan had 9 points and 3 rebounds while shooting 5 of 6 from the free throw line – better than double her season free throw percentage.

Olivia McWilliams added 8 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists in 20 minutes off the bench as the Central Arkansas reserves outscored HBU's 40-18.  No HBU player made more than two field goals, with Shannon Jones finishing with a team-high 8 points on 2-of-8 shooting and making 4-of-8 at the free throw line.

The Sugar Bears won the turnover battle by 12, forcing HBU into 21 while committing just 9, and outscored the Huskies 31-3 in points off of turnovers.

Central Arkansas shot 48.3 percent for the game (29 of 60) and held HBU to just 25.5 percent (13 of 51) including just 12.5 percent (3 of 24) in the first and third quarters combined.

It is the 23rd time the Sugar Bears have held an opponent to less than 40 points during head coach Sandra Rushing's four-plus seasons on the Central Arkansas bench, including the fourth time against a conference opponent.

The win is the Sugar Bears' seventh this season by 30 or more points, including three in conference play and four by more than 40 points.

The Sugar Bears visit Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday, then return home next Saturday for the final home of the season against Stephen F. Austin before wrapping up the regular season at Northwestern State on March 4.
