BEARS SET TO BATTLE CENTRAL BAPTIST, GEORGIA STATE

Conway – After a record-setting opening match, the Central Arkansas men's soccer team is set to return to the pitch for a pair of matches this weekend. The Bears will host cross-town rival Central Baptist on Friday night, before travelling to Georgia State on Sunday.

Central Arkansas (1-0-0) opened the season with a 5-0 win over Green Bay last week, setting a program record for goals in a game in the process. Senior Wes Carson led the way for the Bears, netting a pair of goals, while sophomores Chris Holmes and Daltyn Knutson and freshman Niklas Brodacki each added a goal. Holmes, juniors Blake Stricker and Dango Kumwenda, and freshman Jonathan Gilkes provided assists for the Bears, while freshman Marc Olsen made four saves in the goal for Central Arkansas.

Central Baptist (1-1-0) split on opening weekend, defeating Evangel by a score of 5-3 on Saturday before falling to Southwest Christian University 6-0 on Tuesday evening. The Mustangs are led by sophomore Ferdinand Matebu, who has scored twice and assisted on another goal. In net, junior Dylan Perdue has seen all of the action, making 10 saves and allowing nine goals. Central Arkansas holds a 1-0-0 lead in the all-time series, thanks to a 2-0 win last season.

Georgia State (1-1-0) also split on opening weekend, falling at Mercer 1-0 before rebounding with a 4-1 win over Memphis in Atlanta, Georgia. Sophomore Hannes Burmeister collected a hat-trick in the Panthers' win over Memphis and leads the GSU offense with three goals. Sophomore Max Hennings has the other Panther goal on the season, while junior Jad Elkhalil has the squad's lone assist. Yannick Horn has played all 180 minutes in goal for the Panthers, making five saves and allowing a pair of goals. This will mark the first meeting between the Bears and the Panthers.

"We're excited for the game against CBC," said UCA head coach Ross Duncan. "It's a local rivalry, so we should have a big fan base here for the match. The weather looks amazing as well, so it should be a good night for soccer in Conway."
