CONWAY, Ark. _ For the second consecutive day, the University of Central Arkansas Bears scored 20 runs in completing a record-setting Southland Conference sweep with a 20-4 run-rule victory over the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Sunday at Bear Stadium.
For the weekend, the Bears (21-23, 12-12) scored 50 runs on 56 hits in the three-game sweep of the Cardinals (12-35, 5-19). The 50 runs is a series record in Southland Conference play for the Bears. UCA had 21 hits on Sunday _ after 22 hits on Saturday _ with senior center fielder Tyler Langley going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored in just five innings of work.Â
The Bears used another big inning, this time an 11-run outburst in the second inning, to put the game away. UCA sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, with Langley getting both a two-run triple and a two-run single in the frame. UCA scored 11 runs on just eight hits, with freshman catcher William Hancock adding a two-run single.
UCA, which was tied 1-1 with UIW after one inning, got two more runs in the third inning, including the only unearned run of the weekend for the UIW pitching staff. After a scoreless fourth inning, two more runs came across in the fifth on Logan Preston's RBI double and an RBI ground out by Hancock, who finished 2 for 4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.Â
A four-run sixth inning assured the run rule would come into play as Hancock picked up another RBI with a bases-loaded walk, Michael Haun had a two-run single up the middle and Butch Rea an RBI single to left.
Sophomore left hander Chris Durham came on in the fourth inning and got the victory with a scoreless three innings of relief. Freshman Connor Wells pitched a perfect seventh inning in his first action of the season.
Preston, a senior third baseman from Texarkana, Texas, was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and 4 runs scored, while Brooks Balisterri, Brandon Montalvo, Matt Anderson and Ty Tice all collected two hits. Tice and Haun both had 2 RBI, while Balisterri, Anderson, Hunter Strong and Tice all scored twice.
The Bears will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Pine Bluff, then host Mississippi Valley at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bear Stadium. UCA returns to SLC action next weekend at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.Â
