UCA COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF UAPB WITH 9-0 WIN

PINE BLUFF, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears got home runs from Tyler Langley and Justin McCarty and completed a season sweep of the UAPB Golden Lions with a 9-0 victory on Tuesday at the Torii Hunter Complex.

Sophomore Ty Tice (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings, striking out 6 and allowing 5 hits. Junior Jacob Murray pitched the final three innings for his sixth save for the Bears (22-23), who won their fourth consecutive game and third straight over the Golden Lions (20-22) this season.

The win gave UCA head coach Allen Gum his 400th career coaching victory at the collegiate level and his 174th career victory at UCA.

The Bears drew five walks in the first inning and got a three-run triple from freshman Hunter Strong to stake Tice to a 4-0 lead before he even took the mound. UCA made it 5-0 in the third inning when senior third baseman Logan Preston singled, stole second base and scored on Strong's RBI base hit up the middle.

The Bears then added a single run in the fourth on Langley's one-out home run over the left-center fence, his team-high fifth of the season. In the sixth, pinch-hitter Michael Haun had an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He eventually came in to score on Brooks Balisterri's sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.

In the seventh inning, facing UAPB reliever Antoine Luster, senior Matt Anderson walked before McCarty, from nearby White Hall, hit a two-run shot to left for his third home run of the season.

Murray, returning to the lineup from injury, came on in the seventh and struck out 2 and allowed 2 hits over the final three innings. Strong, from Sheridan, finished 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, while McCarty was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and 1 run scored.

UCA hosts Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference makeup game before hitting the road to Lake Charles, La., this weekend for a Southland Conference series against McNeese State. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Cowboy Diamond.
