BEARS ROMP PAST CARDINALS 21-10 TO TAKE SERIES

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears turned 22 hits into 21 runs in downing the Incarnate Word Cardinals 21-10 in Game 2 of their Southland Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Bear Stadium.

The Bears (20-23, 11-12) scored nine runs in the seventh inning and added four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Senior third baseman Logan Preston led the offensive charge, going 4 for 5 with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored, including a home run and a pair of doubles. Senior second baseman Chris Townsend was just as productive, going 4 for 6 and scoring three times.

The Cardinals (12-34, 5-18) led twice early in the game and were down just 8-6 after scoring a run in the top of the seventh. But the Bears, who took the series after Friday night's 9-0 win, sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine times in the bottom of the seventh. UCA had eight hits, including a three-run home run down the left-field line by senior left fielder Brandon Montalvo and a two-run triple to center by senior center fielder Tyler Langley.

UIW used four pitchers in the inning, and seven for the game, with starter John Schull (2-6) taking the loss. Despite five Cardinal errors, all 21 runs by the Bears were earned. UCA senior Connor McClain (1-0) pitched four innings of relief in his second appearance in as many days, striking  out three and allowing just one earned run for the victory.

Langley, from his leadoff spot, went 2 for 7 with 3 RBI. Montalvo was 2 for 3 with three RBI, 4 runs scored with a home run and triple. Sophomore catcher Justin McCarty was 3 for 5 and sophomore right fielder Ty Tice went 2 for 3 and scored twice. UIW finished with 13 hits, with first baseman Austin Hoffman going 4 for 5.

UCA, which played 15 different position players and used five pitchers, won its second consecutive SLC series after winning 2 of 3 game at New Orleans last weekend.

Game 3 is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
