BEARS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER, REACH 30 WINS FOR FOURTH TIME IN FIVE YEARS

Hammond, La. – The Central Arkansas softball Bears pushed their Southland Conference winning streak to five games on Saturday, getting a 1-0 win and a 6-1 win over the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions. This marks the fourth time in the past five seasons that the Bears have reached 30 wins.

In the day's first game, the Bears (30-15, 11-6 SLC) got yet another outstanding pitching performance from Shivaun Landeros (18-9), who allowed a single hit and three walks while striking out five Lady Lions to pick up her 16th complete game of the season. The senior from Sparks, Nevada didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the seventh inning, and allowed just one runner to advance past first base on the day.

Central Arkansas got the game's only run in the top of the first inning. Right fielder Briana Whisenhunt led off with a single to second base, and advanced to second on a ground out from second baseman Sarah Bigej. Following a popup and a walk from catcher Jessie Taylor, left fielder Hannah Stirton delivered for UCA, singling to centerfield to plate Whisenhunt and give the Bears the lead.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bears got another solid performance in the circle, this time from Kayla Gomness (9-4), who scattered eight hits and two walks while allowing a single run in 6.2 innings. Landeros closed out the game, getting a groundout with runners on first and second to end the game.

UCA put runners on in each of the first four innings, but were unable to plate a run until the fifth, when the Bears struck twice on three hits. Whisenhunt again got things going with a one-out walk, before Bigej moved her into scoring position with a single up the middle. Third baseman Sam Forrest and Taylor then got the Bears on the board, collecting back-to-back doubles to put UCA up 2-0.

The Bears would add to their lead with four runs in the sixth. Designated player Bailey Reynolds led off with a single through the left side. After Brianna McArthur came on to pinch run, pinch hitter Randi Wallace beat out a sacrifice bunt to give the Bears runners at first and second with one out. An error allowed Whisenhunt to reach and loaded the bases for Bigej, who singled up the middle to make it 3-0 UCA. Forrest then poked a double just inside the left-field line to plate a pair of runs, and Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0 UCA.

Southeastern Louisiana (19-23, 5-12 SLC) got a solo home run from designated player Amber Sather in the bottom of the sixth to cut the UCA lead to 6-1.

The Lady Lions got a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the seventh, but Landeros came out of the bullpen and slammed the door to give the Bears the win.
Offensively, the Bears were led by Bigej (3-for-5, one walk, one RBI) and Forrest (2-for-7, three RBI, one walk) on the day.

The Bears will look to complete the sweep tomorrow at noon.
