TIMELY HITS LEAD TO SHUTOUT WIN FOR BEARS

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears finally got the consecutive hits they had been waiting all day for and turned them into a 1-0 victory over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field.

After striking out 14 times on the day, UCA (6-5) got a one-out double from senior center fielder Tyler Langley in the top of the ninth inning off SEMO reliever Clay Chandler. Sophomore right fielder Ty Tice followed with an RBI single to score the only run of the game.

After SEMO pulled its starter Justin Murphy in the ninth after allowing just two hits and striking out 14, UCA left freshman starter Cody Davenport in the game for the bottom of the ninth. He responded by striking out the final two batters of the game _ giving him nine for the game _ to earn the victory and improve to 2-0. Davenport allowed seven hits and walked just one in a 119-pitch effort.

The Redhawks left eight runners on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Davenport worked out of that jam with two fly ball outs.

The Bears, who struck out in nine of their first 10 at-bats of the game, left runners on base in the fifth after Logan Preston's base hit, in the eighth after Hunter Strong's single up the middle, and in the ninth after Tice was stranded at second.

The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
