BEARS COMPLETE SWEEP WITH 3-2, 5-4 VICTORIES

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears had two more come-from-behind victories over Stephen F. Austin on Sunday to complete the Southland Conference sweep at Bear Stadium.

UCA overcame a 2-1 deficit in the opener and won 3-2 with a walk-off single by senior Logan Preston in the bottom of the ninth. In the nightcap, the Bears scored four runs in the seventh inning to come back from down 4-1 and win 5-4 to take all three games in the opening SLC series.

The Bears (9-6, 3-0) trailed in all three games on the weekend but completed the sweep with no starting pitcher recording a victory. The UCA bullpen won all three games, including wins by senior Derek Beier in the first game and sophomore Chris Durham in the second on Sunday.

In the opener, SFA (8-8, 0-3) scored single runs in the sixth and eighth innings before the Bears rallied in the ninth. Senior Tyler Langley drew a one-out walk and senior Brandon Montalvo hit a two-out double to right to tie the game. Preston then shot a base hit throught the right side to score Montalvo with the game winner against SFA reliever Cole Ridgley.

Freshman righthander Cody Davenport tossed seven innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs and striking out 5. Beier threw the final 1 1/3 innings for the win. Sophomore first baseman Jacob Richardson had two of UCA's eight hits, going 2 for 2.

In Game 2, the Lumberjacks broke open a scoreless game with a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. But the Bears got back in it with a single run in the sixth on Justin McCarty's ground out that scored Chris Townsend, who led off the inning with a base hit.

In the seventh, Butch Rea started the rally with a one-out double to left center. Langley singled to right to bring him in to make it 4-2. Ryan Thomas replaced SFA starter Patrick Ledet and he got the second out on a fly ball to center field. But Brandon Montalvo singled to send Langley to third before Preston doubled down the left-field line to tie it at 4-4. McCarty then hit a base hit to center to put the Bears ahead for good.

Durham (2-0) picked up the victory in his second outing of the day with 3 2/3 innings of relief, with junior Jacob Murray getting his fifth save of the season and second of the weekend, striking out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Langley finished 3 for 5, while Townsend and Montalvo had two hits apiece, and Preston and McCarty recording two RBI each. UCA out-hit SFA 13-6.

The Bears will play at Little Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Gary Hogan Field.
