TROJANS USE LONG BALL TO DOWN BEARS 6-5

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. _ The Little Rock Trojans hit a pair of home runs to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 6-5 in Round 1 of the Rock N Roar Rivalry on Wednesday night at Gary Hogan Field.

The Trojans (6-10) used home runs from Ryan Scott and Dalton Thomas to overcome three first-inning errors and record the come-from-behind victory on their home field. Little Rock comes to Conway on April 13, followed by a final meeting between the teams at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock on May 17.

The Bears (9-7) took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, with help from three Little Rock errors. Tyler Langley reached on an error to start the game and advanced to second on Chris Townsend's bunt, and to third on  the first error. Brandon Montalvo knocked in Langley on another misplayed ball by the Trojans.

After Townsend went to third on a wild pitch. Logan Preston brought him in with a fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans got one run back in the third with a pair of doubles off UCA starter Tyler Gray. In the fourth, Little Rock went ahead 3-2 with a two-run double by second baseman Hayden Martin. The Bears answered in the top of the next inning, scoring three times for a 5-3 advantage. Logan Preston had an RBI single to left field and Justin McCarty's two-run double down the left-field line brought in the other two runs.

The Trojans put up a single run in the bottom of the fifth on Ryan Scott's solo home run. A two-run shot  by Dalton Thomas then made it a 6-5 lead for Little Rock in the bottom of the seventh.

UCA threatened in the eighth when McCarty singled to shortstop but he was eventually stranded at second with consecutive strikeouts. Montalvo drew a two-out walk and Preston was hit by a pitch in the ninth against Little Rock closer Cody McGill but he finished it off with a strike out.

McCarty and catcher William Hancock were both 2 for 4, with McCarty getting two RBI. Preston drove in two runs and Langley scored twice. Scott finished 3 for 4 for the Trojans. UCA's Chris Durham got the loss, allowing two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Starter Tyler Gray struck out seven but allowed four earned run in five innings of work.

The Bears return to Southland Conference play this weekend, facing the Lamar Cardinals in Beaumont, Texas. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
