HAMMOND, La. — After securing one of the top two seeds for the Southland Conference Tournament with Wednesday's win over Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas can narrow it down even further as the Sugar Bears look to lock up the top seed on Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana.
A win on Saturday would give the Sugar Bears (23-3, 13-2 Southland) the No. 1 position in next month's tournament, and by virtue of issuing themselves one of the top two seeds they will not play until the tournament semifinals on Saturday, March 12 after receiving a double bye.
The Sugar Bears defeated the Lady Lions (4-22, 3-12) 80-58 in the Farris Center on Feb. 3, using a 52-8 run that included a 36-3 third quarter to overcome what was at one point a 12-point deficit in the second quarter.
Another win over the Lady Lions would give the Sugar Bears 24 for the season, tying their Division I program record set back in 2011-12. That team finished the regular season 24-5 before falling in the first round of the Southland tournament and in the WNIT to eventual champion Oklahoma State.
The Sugar Bears have won the last four against the Lady Lions, and have won in 3 of their last 4 visits to Hammond. The last loss at the University Center came in during that 2012 conference season, when SLU dealt the Sugar Bears one of their only two conference defeats on the year.
SLU comes in on a three-game losing streak, though one of those losses was a 72-70 defeat at league leader Abilene Christian last Monday. The Lady Lions are 3-9 at home this season, while the Sugar Bears are 10-1 in road games and have won 12 straight away from the Farris Center.
After today's game, the Sugar Bears will return home for their final two games of the regular season as they host Nicholos and McNeese State on Wednesday and Saturday.
