BEARS DROP DOUBLEHEADER TO NO. 25 MISSOURI STATE


    CONWAY, Ark _  The No. 25 Missouri State Bears put up 16 runs Saturday to sweep the University of Central Arkansas Bears 6-5 and 10-6 in non-conference action at Bear Stadium.

    MSU (3-0) came from behind with two runs in the top of the ninth in the opener to pull out the victory. In the nightcap, MSU scored seven runs in the middle three innings to beat the Bears and sweep the series.

    In Game 1, Tyler Langley staked the Bears to a early lead in the second inning with a towering grand slam to left field. Second baseman Matt Anderson led off the inning with a triple to left center and catcher Justin McCarty doubled to left center to make it 1-0.

    Butch Rea and Austin White then drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Langley, who blasted a long home run over the left-field fence. UCA loaded the bases again before MSU reliever Sam Perez got the visiting Bears out of the inning with a strikeout.

    UCA freshman starter Cody Davenport allowed a first-inning solo home run to MSU third-baseman Jake Burger and then held MSU scoreless for the next three innings. MSU then put up two runs in the fifth to close the gap to 5-3. They added a run in the eighth and then went ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on Jake Burger's third home run of the series, a two-run shot to left field.

    In the bottom of the ninth, UCA drew three walks off MSU All-American closer Bryan Young but could not score the tying run. Langley finished 2 for 3 with 4 RBI, while White was 2 for 2. Jacob Murray took the loss in relief for the Bears. 

    UCA went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first in the second game on a bases-loaded walk to Matt Anderson by MSU starter Dylan Coleman. MSU answered that run with one of its own in the third, then chalked up three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. 

    The Bears managed a pair of runs in the fifth on Brandon Montalvo's ground out Anderson's RBI single. UCA got one more in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-4 when pinch hitter Chris Townsend got a bunt single and eventually scored on an error.

    But the visiting Bears added two mmore runs in the eighth inning for a 10-4 lead. UCA rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Logan Preston's long fly ball dropped  between outfielders in left center, scoring both Jacob Richardson and Montalvo.

    UCA finished with five hits, with Preston and Anderson both getting two RBI. UCA starter Mark Moyer got the loss, going 3.2 innings before leaving with an apparent injury. Coleman got the victory for MSU.

    The Bears host six games next week, against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday-Wednesday and a four-game series with Eastern Illinois beginning on Friday.
