17-HIT ATTACK CARRIES UCA PAST TTU

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears pounded out 17 hits Wednesday afternoon and downed Tennessee Tech 14-6 in non-conference action at Bear Stadium.

UCA (1-3) had only three extra base hits among the 17 but strung together enough and scored all 14 runs in the fourth through seventh innings. Freshman first baseman Hunter Strong wane 3 for 5 and finished with 5 RBI, including a two-run home run down the right-field line in the sixth.

The Bears fell behind 3-0 in the fourth inning but quickly overcame that deficit with a four-run bottom of the frame. Left fielder Brandon Montalvo, who went 4 for 6 and scored 4 runs, led off the inning with a single and third baseman Logan Preston followed with another. Freshman designated hitter Cody Davenport singled to load the bases before catcher Justin McCarty was hit by a pitch to make it 3-1.

Strong then sent a base hit to right to score Preston and chase TTU starting pitcher Trevor Maloney. Senior center fielder Tyler Langley, who went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, singled to left to bring in both McCarty and Davenport and give the Bears the lead for good.

UCA added three more runs in the fifth on Strong's two-run single to left center and a TTU error that allowed Davenport to score. In the sixth, the Bears plated five more runs on just four hits. Ty Tice and Montalvo had consecutive singles and Tice scored on Preston's sacrifice fly. McCarty then hit a long fly ball to center that TTU's Jake Rowland bobbled on the exchange, allowing Montalvo to score from second base.

Strong greeted reliever Brandon Smith with his home run to right, making it 13-3. Second baseman Lee Raley brought in the final UCA run with a single up the middle that scored Butch Rea, who had walked.

The Golden Eagles (3-1) managed three runs in the seventh inning off UCA winner Chris Durham, but he eventually got out of the inning with a fly ball to right. Durham went 3.2 innings in relief of UCA starter Hunter Neal and struck out 6 and walked 1, allowing two earned runs. Jacob Murray pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out the final two batters.

TTU used seven pitchers, with Maloney picking up the loss, allowing 4 earned runs in 3 innings.

All but one UCA starter had a hit and eight different players scored. Preston finished 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, while Davenport was 2 for 4 and scored 3 times. McCarty was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

UCA continues its eight-game homestand with a four-game series against Eastern Illinois, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. A doubleheader begins at noon Saturday, followed by the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
