BEARS SET TO TACKLE FBS COWBOYS

CONWAY, Ark. _ University of Central Arkansas head coach Steve Campbell knows what his team will face on Saturday against the Big 12 Oklahoma State Cowboys, but he is more concerned about how his Bears improve in their second game of the 2015 season.

The Bears are coming off a disappointing 45-16 loss at Samford last Thursday in their opener. Campbell just wants to see a better, more focused UCA squad on Saturday, in all areas.

"We've put that one to bed,' said Campbell. "After the game we watched the film. And every mistake we made was a correctable mistake.  And that's the good thing. Teams make their most improvement from Week 1 to Week 2. That's our goal right now. We're not near as concerned about Oklahoma State as we are ourselves.'

UCA finished with 462 yards of total offense but scored just 16 points. The Bulldogs racked up 536 yards on just 68 plays, an average of 7.9 yards per play. The Bears did throw for 343 yards, with senior quarterback Taylor Reed setting a school record with 43 completions in 63 attempts. True freshman placekicker Matt Cummins of Conway kicked a 50-yard field goal on his first career attempt, while junior transfer safety Devin Spurlock had his first career interception.

UCA was also penalized 12 times for 139 yards, while Samford had just five for 56 yards.

"Samford's got an outstanding football team. I knew that going in, our players knew that going in,' Campbell said. "But it wasn't so much what they did, it was the mistakes that we made. What we wanted to do, when we got back and dissected the film, to make sure that each thing that happened, that created a big play for them or a negative for us, that we are able to correct that. So that's been our focus this week.

"The No. 1 thing we have to do is eliminate the mistakes and make sure we're doing all the things you have to do in order to win.'

Campbell knows OSU, with more scholarships and the Big 5 conference label, presents a big challenge for the Bears in the first meeting between the teams.

"They have a very good football team, as you would expect out of Oklahoma State,' he said. "They have an outstanding football team, but the focus is on us this week. What can we do to get better and go play our football game. I think if we do that, I like our chances. We're excited about the opportunity to go over to Stillwater and play in that kind of environment.'

Boone Pickens Stadium seats 60,218 and will be hosting the Cowboys' home opener. OSU, which is receving votes in the Top 25 polls, went on the road and beat Central Michigan 24-13 last Saturday. The Chippewas held the Cowboys to 419 total yards and just 24 points. Sophomore quarterback Mason Rudolph copmleted 22 of 32 for 266 yards and one touchdown. Junior running back Chris Carson had 21 carries for 89 yards and no touchdowns.

The OSU defense is led by junior tackle Emmanuel Ogbah, the 2014 Big 12 Defensive lineman of the Year.

The Cowboys are 19-3 in their last 22 non-conference games, and have won 19 consecutive home openers. OSU is 9-0 under head coach Mike Gundy against FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) teams. UCA has only played one other Big 12 team, losing just 42-35 to Texas Tech on the road in last season's opener, getting to within a touchdown twice in the fourth quarter.

Kickoff is 6:35 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Network, and carried on The Point 94.1 and The Bears 91.3.
