CONWAY — Winners of four of their last five, the Sugar Bears look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when the McNeese State Cowgirls visit the Farris Center for the first time since 2013. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
The Sugar Bears (14-10, 7-5 Southland) are playing the second of three home games this week, with Sam Houston State scheduled to visit the Farris Center on Saturday. After defeating Incarnate Word 58-49 on Sunday, the Sugar Bears now turn their attention to the Cowgirls (14-10, 8-5 Southland), who ended UCA's season last year with a 66-62 win in the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas.
The Cowgirls come into tonight's game having won four of their last six, most recently defeating Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana. Prior to those two wins, they suffered consecutive losses to Nicholls and New Orleans – dropping that one 90-86 in triple overtime as New Orleans picked up its only Southland win to date.
McNeese is led by junior guards Allison Baggett and Jalyn Johnson, one of the Southland's top scoring duos at a combined 29.4 points per game. Baggett averages 16.4 points per game and is 7th in conference play in 3-point percentage at .357, while also topping the Southland with a .914 free throw percentage in conference games. Johnson, who averages 13 points per game, also leads the Southland with 6.4 assists per game during league play and is averaging 5.2 per game for the season.
The Cowgirls are 2nd in conference play in scoring, putting up 71.8 points per game, while the Sugar Bears score just 55.5 per contest. On the flipside, the Sugar Bears – who rank 27th nationally in scoring defense this season – are surrendering just 57.8 points per game in league play while McNeese ranks 12th in the league with 70.7 ppg allowed.
UCA has an 11-6 lead in the all-time series, but has not defeated the Cowgirls in Conway since a 71-70 double-overtime win in 2012. The teams met only once in 2014 in Lake Charles, and McNeese won the 2013 meeting in Conway 77-61. The neutral-site meeting in Katy last season aside,  the road team has won the last four meetings in the series with UCA winning 66-50 in Lake Charles last season, 77-69 in 2013 and 64-53 in 2012.
