NATCHITOCHES, La. — Riding a three-game streak in which they've held league opponents to fewer than 50 points in three straight games for the first time in program history, the Sugar Bears look to make it four in a row at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday against the team that started the current streak in the Northwestern State Lady Demons.
The Sugar Bears (13-9, 6-4 Southland) got their current streak going with a 63-46 win over the Lady Demons (12-10, 7-4) in the Farris Center on Jan. 28, following with wins at Southeastern Louisiana and back at home against New Orleans.
Now they hit the road again, traveling to Prather Coliseum where last season the Lady Demons blasted the Sugar Bears 77-45 in a game in which they shot 57.6 percent while holding the Sugar Bears to 32.7, dominating both halves – turning a 31-18 halftime lead into the 32-point win with a 46-27 second half.
During their current streak, the Sugar Bears have kept their last three opponents to an average of just 46 points, lowering their season average to 56.5 points per game, which ties Auburn for the 32nd-ranked scoring defense nationally.
The game features two of the league's top 10 scorers in conference play, with Northwestern State's Janelle Perez 2nd at 19.1 per game and UCA's
Maggie Proffitt 8th at 14.7. Perez also leads the league in 3-point shooting percentage, making 46.8 percent of her attempts in league play while Proffitt is 10th at 31.1.
Proffitt scored 28 in the first meeting this season against the Lady Demons, hitting six 3-pointers in the win. Perez had 19 for the Lady Demons, though no other NSU player scored more than six and Perez was held without an assist for the only time this season.
After Thursday's game, the Sugar Bears will not play another road game for two weeks, with three straight in the Farris Center against Incarnate Word, McNeese State and Sam Houston State.
