Conway – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team closed out the home portion of their schedule on Sunday, hosting the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex. The Bears struck first on the day, but the Islanders got a pair of unanswered goals to get the 2-1 win.
Central Arkansas (6-8-1, 3-4-1 SLC) wasted little time in scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when freshman
Camille Bassett dribbled through the AMCC back line and fired from four yards out, giving Central Arkansas a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the season.
The Islanders (3-9-2, 3-4-1 SLC) evened the score in the 21
st minute, when Emma Biba fired a shot that Central Arkansas keeper Lauren Mercuri deflected off of the crossbar.
The ball fell to Biba, who fired again, scoring from three yards out for her first goal of the season.
After the halftime break, both sides came out firing, combining for five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. That remained the case until there were just 90 seconds to play, when Kelly Kristin launched a ball into the box from 30 yards out that found its way into the goal to give the Islanders the 2-1 win.
On the day, put eight shots on goal, led by
Shelby Wilson and
Ashley Smith, who each put a pair of shots on frame. Bassett,
Kristen Ricks,
Dayna Mounie, and
Kelly McLaughlin each added one shot on target. In goal for the Bears,
Lauren Mercuri made a pair of saves.
Central Arkansas hits the road for a pair of matches next weekend, taking on Southeastern Louisiana at 4:00 PM on Friday, before battling Nicholls at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
