NEW ORLEANS — After nearly a week away from action, the Sugar Bears return to the court on Wednesday night as they face off against New Orleans at Lakefront Arena, looking to snap a three-game skid.
The Sugar Bears (9-8, 2-3 Southland) will meet up with a Privateers team that is still in search of its first Southland Conference victory since joining the season last year. New Orleans has lost all 23 of its Southland games to date, going 0-18 last season en route to an 0-29 overall mark. This year the Privateers are 2-12 overall, and 0-5 in league play having most recently lost 63-45 at Houston Baptist on Saturday. HBU also dealt the Sugar Bears their most recent loss with a 58-37 victory last Thursday. New Orleans' last victory came on Dec. 30 with a 58-55 win over Kent State. Their other win was an 87-54 rout of Crowley's Ridge College.
Wednesday's game will be the second meeting between UCA and UNO, with the Sugar Bears winning 62-30 last year in the Farris Center as they set the program record for fewest points allowed to a Division I opponent while keeping the Privateers to the fewest points in a Southland game since 2005. The Sugar Bears lead 46-16 at the half, with
Maggie Proffitt scoring 16 in the half for UCA en route to a game-high 23.
Despite allowing an average of 71 points per game over their last three games, the Sugar Bears still lead the Southland and are just outside the national top 50 in scoring defense at 57.9 points per game. New Orleans is allowing 70.1 per game for the season while scoring just 55.1.
New Orleans does not have a player scoring more than 9 points per game, with freshman Randi Brown leading the way at 8.4 despite not yet making a start and playing just 16.9 minutes per game. Junior forward Yasmin Taylor averages 5.4 points and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.
The game is the Sugar Bears' last of three in a row on the road, with the next two and three of the next four in the Farris Center beginning with Nicholls on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the UCA & NIcholls men to follow.
