FAMILIAR FACES ABOUND WHEN BEARS-LUMBERJACKS CLASH

CONWAY, Ark. _ There will be a lot of familiar faces when the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks host the University of Central Arkansas Bears in Southland Conference football action at 6 p.m. Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.

The Lumberjacks (3-1, 0-0) are coached by former UCA head coach Clint Conque, along with several former Bears' assistant coaches that made the move with him. The UCA players, the majority of whom were recruited by the previous staff, are under the direction of head coach Steve Campbell and three former assistants who remained at UCA _ offensive coordinator Nathan Brown, defensive line coach Dan Augustine and assistant offensive line coach Robert Cunningham.

"The mantra I teach is each game is the most important game of the year,' said Campbell, 'because it's the next game. This one has ramifications because it's a conference game and a lot of our players were recruited by their head coach, and all that. But all that stuff is really immaterial once you walk inside those white lines.

"The game is the game. All the rest of that stuff doesn't matter. This game this week is the most important game in America because it's our game and it's the next game. Everything else doesn't really matter. That's what we'll talk about and what we'll focus on.

"When you deal with young people, and older people, you really have to block out and focus on the things you can control. The rest of that stuff, we can't control. Let's focus on eliminating turnovers, taking the right steps, doing our fundamentals right... if we do those things right, the rest of it will take care of itself.

The Bears are 1-0 in SLC play after last Saturday's 52-18 victory over the Nicholls Colonels at First Security Field at Estes Stadium. The Lumberjacks had an open date to prepare for their conference opener. Their last outing was a 35-20 victory over Weber State on Sept. 20, their third of four consecutive home games.

"There were a lot of positives from this past week, and we need to continue to build on those,' said Campbell. "We need to cut down on our turnovers, that was one of the glaring things that showed up this past week. It's two weeks in a row we put the ball on the ground. That will definitely be a point of interest this week.'

The Bears beat the 'Jacks 66-31 in a wild offensive explosion last year in Conway, a game in which the teams combined for 1,326 yards of offense (681 each), ran a combined 174 plays and scored a combined 13 touchdowns. It was the most points scored by the Bears since they scored 70 against NAIA Bacone College in 2012 and the most allowed by the Lumberjacks since TCU scored 66 in 2008.

UCA scored 38 points in the third quarter alone, scoring on six consecutive possessions, three of those in a span of 2:25.

The Bears enter this year's game averaging 35.4 points per game while SFA averages 31.8. The teams feature two of the top passing units in the SLC, with UCA averaging 277.2 yards per game through the air and SFA at 294.5. The 'Jacks also have the top rusher in the league in senior Gus Johnson, who averages 123 yards per game on the ground.

UCA's defense had a school-record 18 tackles for loss last week against Nicholls, and 10 the previous week against Missouri State. The Bears are seventh in the nation among FCS schools with a 9.4 average per game.

The game will be shown at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN3.
