Conway, Ark. –
The Central Arkansas men's soccer team faced off with the UMKC 'Roos in the second leg of the Memphis/UCA Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Bears took down the 'Roos 3-0 to pick up the victory in both the game and the tournament.
The Bears (3-1-0) struck three times in the first half, and allowed just one shot on goal to earn the win. Taylor Hart got the scoring started, collecting a cross from Wes Carson in the seventh minute and tapping it past the UMKC keeper. In the 18
th minute, Sam Cusack dumped a ball behind the 'Roos' (2-2-0) back line and Hart beat the defense to it, slotting it past the keeper for his second goal of the day and the 2-0 lead. Jaden Hoth closed out the scoring in the 41
st minute, blasting a shot over the keeper from 25 yards out to push the lead to 3-0.
Taran Meyer got the win in goal for the Bears, earning his second shutout of the season and making one save. Chris McGaughey was in goal for the 'Roos, making three saves and allowing three goals.
"Both teams had to play in the heat, but we managed the game beter, and that was the difference," said head coach Ross Duncan after the game. "Taylor did a great job of finishing on the ball from Wes [Carson]. The pressure and the spacing that Wes brings will continue to open up space for other guys all year."
Coming into today's match, the Bears sat at the top of the Classic leaderboard with Memphis, who notched a 1-0 victory over UMKC on Friday night. The Tigers scored a 2-1 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday, but UCA was declared the winner of the tourney on a tie-breaker. Memphis finished in second place, Oral Roberts finished third, and UMKC finished in fourth.
Logan Miller was named the Tournament MVP, after scoring the only goal of the Bears' 1-0 victory on Friday. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Hoth, Hart, and Meyer. Memphis placed three players on the team, while Oral Roberts and UMKC each had two players honored.
The Bears take to the road for a pair of games this upcoming weekend. Both games will be part of a tournament hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Central Arkansas will play Cal-State Northridge at 4:00 on Friday afternoon, before facing off against Santa Clara at 11:00 Sunday morning.
