The Central Arkansas men's soccer team played their second game in the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational on Sunday, battling host Lipscomb. The Bears took down the Bisons 2-0. "It was a big response from what was a tough day on Friday," said head coach Ross Duncan after the game. "We asked our guys to do some things, and I thought they nailed it today."
Logan Miller gave Central Arkansas (4-4-0) the 1-0 lead, converting a penalty kick in the 46h minute for his fourth goal of the season. "Logan brings a lot of leadership to our team, and his goal-scoring keeps a lot of pressure off of the rest of the team," said Duncan. Wes Carson added an insurance goal in the 61
st minute, beating a Lipscomb (3-3-1) defender inside the box for his third goal this season. "We told our guys that if we could keep it at 0-0 for as long as possible, then we could make something good happen," said Duncan, "Logan and Wes made something good happen for us."
Miller led the way for the Central Arkansas offense, placing all three of his shots on target. Carson, Jayden Hoth, and Daylon Schiffel each added a shot on goal. Kevin McMahon led the Lipscomb offense, putting both of his shot attempts on target, while six other Bisons added shots on goal. Patxi Shortsleed was in goal for Central Arkansas, making eight saves. "Patxi has been doing really well in training, so we asked him to step up and be the man today," said Duncan before adding, "He responded really well." Micah Bledsoe was in goal for Lipscomb, making four saves and allowing two goals.
The win means that the Bears finish second in the Lipscomb Invitational. Belmont finished the tourney with a win and a tie, giving them the edge in points over Central Arkansas 4-to-3. Shortsleeve, Miller, and Carson we all three named to the All-Tournament Team for their performance.
Central Arkansas returns to the field on Saturday, traveling to Saint Louis, Missouri to face off against Saint Louis University. The game will get underway at 7:30 on Saturday evening. "We've got a big game this weekend against Saint Louis; it'll be a tough tests, so it was a good time to get some things right defensively today."
