CONWAY — Central Arkansas will attempt to end its five-game losing streak on Saturday as the Sugar Bears play host to the Sam Houston State Bearkats, who sit in a tie atop the Southland Conference standings with Lamar.
Though both teams come into Saturday's game with 13-11 overall records, the Bearkats are 9-3 in league play, while the Sugar Bears are 6-7 after dropping their last five – including three in the Farris Center. The most recent was a 60-58 overtime loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Bearkats are also coming off a loss, having been on the wrong side of a 90-40 rout at Oral Roberts on Thursday night.
They will be looking to complete a season sweep of the Sugar Bears, having won 64-48 in Huntsville last month. The two teams have gone back and forth in the series, with the teams alternating wins in the last six meetings. The Sugar Bears defeated the Bearkats 61-55 last season in the Farris Center.
The game will feature the league's top three rebounders, with Sam Houston's Sequeena Thomas leading the way at 13.3 per game in Southland play. Central Arkansas' Megan Herbert and Courtney Duever are Nos. 2 and 3 at 11.5 and 8.2, respectively.
Herbert is the league's leading scorer both in conference play and for the entire season, averaging 20.8 per game in conference games and 19.1 for the season. Duever is 10th, averaging 13.4 for the season and 14.2 in conference games. Sam Houston State's Britni Martin is averaging 16.7 per game in league play, fourth-best in the league, and is fifth overall – also a 16.7 average.
Saturday's game will be the Sugar Bears' Pink Zone game, a benefit game with proceeds going to the cancer center at Conway Regional Medical Center. Admission to the game will be a $2 donation to Conway Regional. Season ticket holders will be admitted with their ticket and will not be required to make the $2 donation.
