BEARS TOP WARHAWKS 2-1 TO SWEEP ROAD TRIP

Junior Kristin Pollard scored her second goal of the season Sunday afternoon
MONROE, La. — The Central Arkansas Women’s Soccer team beat the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete their season-opening road trip with a 2-0 record.

It was the first win for the Bears in six tries against the Warhawks, who had beaten UCA in their season opener the previous two seasons and owned a 4-0-1 series lead. The victory gives the Bears their first 2-0 start since 2005, and is the first time in program history that they have started the season with consecutive road victories.

Following an offensive outpouring against Alcorn State on Friday night in which they scored 10 goals, the Bears found themselves in a more closely contested match Sunday. After a first half that saw the teams combine for seven shots, each team surpassed that total in the second half. Central Arkansas struck first, when Kristin Pollard netted her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute. Brooke Ballard added an insurance goal in the 78th minute. Ballard’s goal would prove to be the game-winner, as the Warhawks would score the final goal of the game a mere 13 seconds later when Karlea Fehr scored her first goal of the season.

In goal for the Bears, Kelsey Gochnauer compiled six saves, while Alex Holland made four saves for the Warhawks. The Bears took 13 shots on the game, with ten of those coming in the second half. They placed six shots on goal. Louisiana-Monroe took eight of their 12 shots in the second half, placing seven on goal.

The Bears return to action on August 26, opening their home season by hosting Lipscomb. They then host Louisiana Tech on August 28.
