SOFTBALL BEARS SWEPT AT UTSA

Senior outfielder Nicole Beals
SAN ANTONIO -- Central Arkansas suffered a pair of losses on Saturday, falling 3-0 and 2-1 as they were swept on the road at UTSA in a Southland Conference doubleheader.

The Bears (27-17, 5-7 Southland) came up just short in the nightcap, losing in the bottom of the seventh when the homestanding Roadrunners (16-20, 6-4) got a two-out double to drive in the winning run. After falling behind in the bottom of the fourth, UCA tied the game in the top of the fifth when Melanie Bryant drove in Stephanie Lasley on a fielder's choice to second base. From that point, the Bears were limited to one hit and two walks and were unable to cross the plate again. In the opener, UCA got just two hits -- a first-inning single by Nicole Beals and another in the third from Melissa Bryant -- and struck out nine times as they were shut out for the second time over the weekend.

UCA returns to action at home on Tuesday against Hendrix College and Wednesday against ULM before resuming Southland play on Friday and Saturday when the Bears host Nicholls State on UCA Softball Alumni Weekend.
