CONWAY — The Central Arkansas Bears bounced back from a rough weekend in explosive fashion Tuesday night, blasting cross-town foe Hendrix College at Farris Field 18-1 to bring an end to their four-game losing streak.
The 18 runs ties for fourth-most in UCA history, and the 15 hits pounded out by the Bears ties for the seventh-most. The 15 runs batted in and the 26 total bases are fifth-most in program history.
The Bears (28-17) struck early against the Warriors (13-12) when catcher Melanie Bryant hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating left fielder Nicole Beals in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
But it was the second inning that would prove to be a nightmare for the Warriors, as the Bears scored 15 runs on 10 hits and three Hendrix errors to extend the lead to 16. The inning saw right fielder Katie McGregor lead off with a home run in the first of her three at-bats, Beals gather her second and third hits of the night, and the Bears send eleven batters to the plate before an out was recorded. In all, UCA made 20 plate appearances in the inning.
The Bears added two runs in the fourth inning, when McGregor drove a ball to left field for a two-run homerun, her second of the night.
For the night, McGregor was 3-for-4 with four RBI, Beals was 3-for-3 with three RBI, first baseman Ashley Boswell was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Bryant was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and shortstop Lissa Avitia was 1-for-2 with three RBI. For the Warriors, pitcher/first baseman Ashley Halbert was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Kelly Martino (3-1) got the win for the Bears, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out a pair. Halbert (9-5) got the loss for the Warriors, lasting only 1.1 innings while giving up 13 runs, only three of which were earned.
The Bears return to action tomorrow night in Conway, hosting Louisiana-Monroe at 5 p.m. They then return to conference play this weekend in Conway, hosting Nicholls State on Friday evening at 6:00, and again on Saturday at noon.
