SUGAR BEARS HAVE SIGHTS ON TOP SEED, SHARE OF SOUTHLAND TITLE

A win Saturday would guarantee Central Arkansas at least a share of the Southland title.
HAMMOND, La. — The most lopsided loss in Sugar Bear history occurred here in Hammond in 1977 when Southeastern Louisiana trounced UCA 132-50 on their way to a national championship in the now-defunct AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which was started in 1971 and discontinued in 1982).

Fast-forward 35 years and that same Lady Lion team will again have a chance to be on hand for a piece of Sugar Bear history, as Southeastern's 1976-77 team will be in attendance as part of Alumni Weekend at the University Center. But this time around, the Sugar Bears are hoping to be on the right end of the record book rewrite.

When the Sugar Bears (21-4, 12-1 Southland) and Lady Lions (10-16, 5-8) meet up on Saturday at 3 p.m., it will be UCA's turn to gun for a championship – needing one win in its final three games to secure at least a share of its first Southland Conference title and the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament in Katy, Texas beginning March 6.

It could prove a daunting task, however, against a Southeastern team that is attempting to hold onto its one-game lead for the eighth and final spot in the tournament. The Lady Lions are up a game on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UTSA and UT Arlington who are all 4-9 in conference play. Southeastern owns the tiebreaker over UTSA and UTA, having beaten UTSA by one and destroying the Mavs by 30 a week ago in the University Center.

The University Center, where the Lady Lions have eight wins by an average of 21 points this season, has proven tough for the Sugar Bears in recent past. Last season UCA was able to steal a 69-65 win in a game that was tied with 46 seconds left. Two seasons ago was disastrous for UCA as the Sugar Bears, who had defeated the Lady Lions by 20 in the Farris Center a month prior, were outscored 40-17 in the second half en route to a 77-50 loss. The meeting in Hammond three seasons ago wasn't much better for UCA with Southeastern winning 71-54.

In this season's first meeting in Conway, the Lady Lions led the Sugar Bears at halftime before UCA put up 49 second-half points en route to a 71-54 win.

Megan Herbert had 26 points and 9 rebounds in that game, starting an eight-game streak where she has averaged 23.5 points and 12.6 rebounds. Since then, she has recorded seven consecutive double-doubles to extend her Southland and UCA career record total to 62 – 18th in Division I history. For the season Herbert is averaging 17.4 points (while shooting a league-best 53.3 percent) and 11.0 rebounds, with 19 points and 11.9 rebounds in conference play while shooting 54.2 percent – second in the league in all categories.

Nakeia Guiden, who topped the 1,000-point mark for her career on Wednesday, is 16th in the league in scoring at 11.8 points per game in Southland play. Desiree' Rogers is ninth in rebounding at 7.2 per contest, and Destinee Rogers leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.9-to-1.

Aja Gibson, a 6-1sophomore forward, leads Southeastern at 11.7 points and 7 rebounds per game. Senior guard Kelli Jenkins averages 11 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists, including a league-best 5.6 per game in Southland games.

The game can be heard on KUCA 91.3 FM The Bear and on ucagameday.com with pregame beginning at 2:40 p.m.
